Working Like a Cell

"One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done." -- Marie Curie.

From this quote made by Marie Curie, I had an idea that this may not only refer to a teacher but also to a cell. There are times when we forget or neglect what a teacher has contributed to our education, but we always see little children around us. Children who need the help of teachers, children who need to be literate. A cell may be so small that we cannot see how it works in our body, but we always see the result of each cell’s task, it gives us life – it helps us function.

A cell is the smallest unit of life. It has an important role for the growth and development of organisms. The inside and outside of the cell must function well so that the organism may also perform well for its survival. Just like a cell, a teacher has a significant role in the society: to shape the lives of the young. The teacher must strive to be at his best because what this is what he will offer his students. His whole person, in exchange for being a good role model and to hone the minds of the young ones.

A cell has a purpose. It has to covert the food that we eat into energy. To covert this, a cell contains organelles (little organs) with specialized functions. As a teacher, my purpose is to ensure that learning takes place in my classroom. My pupils are my organelles and I take on the responsibility to make them functional and productive. There may be times that I become frustrated if I don’t meet my expectations after the lesson, but I know I should be patient and give my utmost effort to make all my pupils take at least a piece of knowledge as they leave the classroom.

Each time I start my day, I think of the things that I want to accomplish by day’s end. Will I be productive? Will I attain the objectives in my lessons?…...

...The cell This semester I enrolled in the terrorism course. One of the requirements was to read a book called, The Cell, Inside the 9/11 Plot, and By John J. Miller. I thoroughly enjoy the topic of terrorism and I continually educate myself on this topic. I actually began to read the book the weekend of Sept 11th 2011. The book over all was a very intense book, it went into great details on many avenues of the 9/11 plot and what went wrong. I have written a review of my first hand account of this book and what it means to me. The authors do a very good job of providing an overview of the long string of Islamic fundamentalist attacks on American interests and the homeland, from the Meir Kahane assassination, on November 5, 1990, to the attacks on September 11, 2001.  In fact, they trace some of the origins of the reign of terror back to groups like the Black Liberation Army, which ended up overlapping with Muslim fundamentalists groups, helping to train them and to acquire arms.  It was actually in 1980, when the BLA, Black Panthers, Weather Underground, and others were engaging in domestic terrorism in and around New York City that the FBI and the New York Police Department formed a Joint Terrorism Task Force.  Most of the book follows the work of the JTTF in general and of Agent John O'Neill.  Mr. O'Neill, in a bitter irony, had just left the JTTF to take a job as Chief of Security at the World Trade Center when the towers were struck.   His stories, and John Miller’s long...

It is important to study the cell and its components because it enables understanding of our own life and opens up windows of opportunity for the future generations. Understanding cells and their component functions allows for better understanding of disease and the possibility of cures or better treatment options. Biologists study the cell in healthy and diseased states to develop new vaccines, medicines, plants with improved qualities and to gain a better understanding of how all living things live. The study of cells and its components is also helpful in solving crimes through forensic science. In biotechnology, the study of cells is used to clone plants and animals, and with time possibly for the production of organs. In studying cells it is important to know what organism the cell comes from. There are two types of cells, the prokaryotic and eukaryotic. The prokaryotic were the first type of cells to evolve. Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus; bacteria are the best known prokaryotic cells. Organisms that contain eukaryotic cells include fungi, animals, and plants as well as some unicellular organisms. The latter can be attributed to teenagers who also use existing words such as “like” in different context. Patricia T O’Conner former editor of The New York Times, author of five books about the English language and writer of the article on language “Like”, states that the word like is the “New Say” and that “I’ve always believed that young people are capable of knowing when to use formal versus informal, written versus spoken English’’ (para.19). Over the last few years, there has been an up rise in car accidents and the probable cause is the use of cell phones. At one point drunk driving was the biggest cause of car accidents but now cell phone users are at risk as well. In some states across America, a law was made to ban cell phone use while driving but what about the other states. The probability of drivers talking on the cell phone and getting into accidents is only getting higher. The Government should ban cell phone use while driving in all states. In the past five years, cell phone use while driving has become the next biggest problem for the government to handle. Even though some government officials feel it is not causing that much of a problem. In a recent study done at the turn of the century by Robert W. Hahn and Paul C. Tetlock, cell phone use in cars will have caused about 10,000 serious accidents that year, leading to 100 fatalities. In 2002, another study was made by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis. In their study, they found that drivers using cell phones are responsible for about 6 percent of U.S auto accidents each year, killing an estimated 2,600 people and injuring 330,000 others (Pickler, 2002).
