In today’s economy and with all the tools of TV and the Internet at the disposal marketing encompasses more than just the advertising and selling of products and/ or services. The target are the consumer(s) locally or even internationally and to manipulating them to believe that it is in their best interest to acquire the goods and services from a particular industry. However, marketing can be further defined as "the performance activities that seek to accomplish an business’ objective by anticipating customer or client needs and directing a flow of need satisfying goods and services from producer to customer or client" Perrault, Cannon, and McCarthy (2009)
According to However, Kotler and Keller (2009) pg. 5 marketing includes all of the activities a business accomplishes to identify customers, products and services that will fill a void, targeting potential customers with advertising, delivering the products or services, and following through with quality customer service. Marketing has invited products and services into our homes and lives through the aid of mass media such as Newspaper, Internet, and TV ads.
The internet and all of its possibilities has opened opportunities for countless entrepreneurs and their products and services.
For example, Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard University student and his creation of Facebook.
It started out as Facemash with objective to bring the student experience especially dating to the internet.
Initially the website was called thefacebook and the creator, Zuckerberg, began writing the code for a new website, 2003/2004. At first thefacebook’s membership was restricted to students of Harvard University. In March 2004, Facebook expanded to Stanford, Columbia, and Yale. Statistics indicate that 3.4 million people were born, which is 20 percent more than in 1945. Many professionals and academics have conducted extensive research to find a conclusion for this unexplained trend among the boomer generation. Professionals such as Dr. Phillips and Augustine J. Kposowa, have different theories that were determined by their own studies and research. The theories range from marital problems and social isolation to the economy and long-term unemployment. The CDC statics confirm that the causes of death are by firearms, suffocation, and poisoning. The increase of poisoning suicides has been due to prescription pain medication overdoses. Thomas Joiner believes in suicidal behaviors and characteristics in all ages and sex, not as a predisposed category of individuals. Leonard Steinhorn disagrees with the CDC statistics for the suicide rate in boomers and conveys his own research that was created by two doctors. The Population Reference Bureau estimates that there are 76.4 million baby boomers (as of April 2014). About 3 million baby boomers will hit retirement age every year for the next 20 years (Barr, 2014). Healthypeople.gov estimates that 60 percent of this population will be managing more than one chronic condition by 2030. The American Hospital Association notes that the over 65 population will nearly triple as a result of the aging Boomers. What this means for us healthcare providers is that our healthcare system will be challenged with caring for a significantly increased amount of elderly with chronic ailments that we are seeing now. This will increase healthcare costs as chronic disease management increases and transitions are made from private insurance carriers to Medicare. I interviewed a baccalaureate nurse who works on the geriatric medical surgical unit in my hospital and asked her to identify the special needs of the Baby Boomer Generation. She has been a nurse for 25 years and has worked on that unit for the past 12 years.
