This artist has brilliant works of art that uses many types of mediums and showing figures of African Americans and others by combining different kinds of images, using oil paints, and also water colors he did when he lived on Island of St. Martin, he use’s collage materials to show us the world thought his eyes,” Bearden is one of Americas greatest Artists” (Romare Bearden His Life and Art) cover page.

“He was born on September 2, 1911 the only child of Bessye and Howard Bearden in his grandmother home at 401 South Graham Street, Charlotte, North Carolina”. Due to the prejudice of the South and Jim Crow laws plus the lack of professional opportunities, for young blacks his father moved the family to New York City when he was three years old. Romare family had it very tuff times moving back and front out of New York, but they ended up in a stable apartment in Harlem in 1920. It was hard times for black people then and finding work was very difficult for his parents (Romare Bearden His Life and Art) page 15, 17, 20.

Bessye his mother who had a college education got a job working for New York City school board and was the first black women to have that position. And she also was a correspondent at the Chicago Defender, a social club of the community. So she expected her son to do very well in school. But Harlem school were changing everyday with more black moving up from the south, so Romare was sent to live with his grandmother (page 29).

In 1925, Bearden went to Pittsburgh where he lived with his grandmother and graduated from Peabody High School in 1929. The Artist

...Introduction In current world of moviemaking, films are often created to meet the formula that appeal to today’s audiences. Modern movies offer high action, incredible special effects, 3D, or 3D animation to capture the audience’s attention, but one Oscar winning film deviated from this traditional recipe, “The Artist”. French director Michel Hazanavicius brought back to life the bygone era of silent movies and broke the current Hollywood blueprint. A quote from the novel “The Chosen” seems appropriate when describing this film, “I've begun to realize that you can listen to silence and learn from it. It has a quality and a dimension all its own” (Potok, 1967). “The Artist” The year is 1927 and Hollywood is in its last few years of silent movie production. A new and exciting medium is starting to make its way into the theaters, the “talkies.” George Valentine (Jean Dujardin), a mixture of Rudolf Valentino, Errol Flynn, and Douglas Fairbanks, is the biggest superstar at the studio he works for and on the silent screen. Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) is the fledgling extra looking to find her way in Hollywood. Peppy, with her unforgettable smile and charm makes an impression on George who happens to be at odds with his wife in his personal life. There is obvious chemistry between the two that is sparked in a playful dance scene when George mimics the steps of Peppy, but doesn’t realize who it is because he can only see her legs. George and......

Activity I Enjoy

...I. Show us an activity you enjoy doing. Tell us how you think it contributes to your personal and professional development I began training and coaching beach volley last year. The idea came into my mind while I was watching the beach volley tournament of my girlfriend job and many participants were complaining about the different level of the teams. Once back home I explained my idea to my girlfriend which is a volley professional and introduced me to the sport and she bought it. The reason why I have selected this activity is because it contributes to strengthen the relationship with my girlfriend, sharing and enjoying together an important portion of my few spare times, since my job is very time consuming being “up in the air all the time”. I therefore killed two birds with one stone, keeping my girlfriend happy without sacrificing my preferred hobby: playing sport. Beach Volley, as any other sport, is good for both physical and mental health. It makes my little heart muscle big and strong and it helps me get rid of toxins from the body. When I am on the beach playing with the “guys” I feel relaxed and, looking at the immensity of the Mediterranean Sea I am able to forget the daily difficulties and recharge my battery. Furthermore, it helps me on my self-awareness development. During this period when the current crisis is oppressing specific sector like the public research, I feel the need to collaborate in activities that contribute to the improvement of some...

Season I Like Most

...I like summer the most. This may seem Stanger, but it is a fact for me. Let me first narrate the good and the bad sides of the seasons clearly. In summer, the heat becomes oppressive. It causes physical hardship that sometimes become unbearable. We feel easily tired. What with the heat and the sweat and the dust and the flies at times, it is positively maddening. On the other hand, the general health is usually good. The discomforts caused by cold season ailments of digestion, common in the rainy season, practically do not exist in this stern season. Further, the sultry and humid heat of noonday is usually compensated by the refreshing breeze that blows in at about evening. And then a thunder-shower or two brings down the temperature and gives us a pleasant respite. Summer has richer compensations that make it so dear to me. First, there is the mango, the world's wonder-fruit. Next, there is the joy of playing football, the world's most popular game. As soon as the sea-breeze begins to blow across the fields, out we go with our ball, and then there is a joy of having a refreshing bath that follows. It cools the body and soothes the mind. At what season, again, is the sweetness of an ice-cream or a cold drink so deliciously inviting? At night we may sleep under the electric fan or the open sky, refreshed by the breeze. In summer, we can go up a hill-side station or down to a seaside resort and both are equally welcome. Above all, their is the charm of the long......

What I Remember Most

...me it was my grandmother’s house. My grandmother’s house has a very special place in my heart. I lived with my grandmother for many years when I was little. There has never been a place where I had a feeling of such joy and happiness. What a wonderful feeling of joy and peace waking up in my Grandmother’s home, that grew small as I grew big. The humble white house with black trimming that my great great grandfather built had a tall chimney and a broke down picket fence that my brother and I loved to run and jump over in the small town of Mound Bayou Mississippi. From the squeaky front porch swing you could see all the way down the street. Looking to the left you could see my grandmother’s country store, and to the right there was a field with grass as tall as the days were long that my friends and I loved to play hide-n-seek in. Knowing if I lay in bed long enough I would soon hear my grandmother's heavy feet rushing down the hall opening the back porch door to go hang clothes that she had just finished hand washing. The door made a squeal, almost a wine then a slam! I was sure the door was responsible for waking me up every morning in that house. Her feet would almost stomp as she rushed back to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for my brother and I before school. I would lay there and say to myself that 5 a.m. was too early for anybody to get up and do anything. Soon I would hear my grandmother and Miss Minnie laughing, teasing and enjoying the company of one......

Activities I Enjoy

...family we enjoy interacting in certain activities. My mother enjoys sitting around the house watching lifetime movies and eating hot dogs. My father loves to go fishing every chance he gets. That’s his meditation. My brother enjoys playing football. Football is his life. He wants to be in the NFL. My sister enjoys spending time with her friends, going out and exploring certain parts of the town. My other brother enjoys shopping for clothes. He takes pride in his clothing, and to him clothes are what make a person. My aunts enjoy drinking. They feel the best way to have a good time is if you are either drunk or almost drunk. My little cousins enjoy running around outside until the soles of their shoes have fallen off. However, none of those activities are what I enjoy doing. The activity I enjoy is playing basketball. One reason I enjoy playing basketball is because it kept me out of trouble. Another reason I enjoy playing basketball because it’s a family game. Playing basketball is something I have always enjoyed doing very since I was a little girl. I have played basketball for church organizations, school, and, the most common place, the park. Basketball plays a major role in my life. It’s more than just a game to me. It’s a lifestyle. Basketball is my everything. I really don’t know who I would be if I was never introduced to the game of basketball. Basketball kept me on the right path of life. I stayed out of trouble because I stayed in the gym. I always thought when I......

Textile Artist

...Textile Artist During my browsing on a Google search, I ran into a contemporary textile/fiber artist from the United Kingdom by the name of Alice Kettle. At first the reason why I had chosen to write about her is because she uses organic material for her projects. She has her degree in Fine Arts as well as Textile art. I am very much attracted to the art that she portrays in her textile. I can see a lot of different people, emotion, and stories embodied in her pieces. She uses varieties in the thickness and types of thread that is stitched to cloth. That reminds me a little of what I have been doing, which is exploring varieties of yarn, however the reason I do so is to try new material because I am new to textile making. I have found that I like the different materials used, it creates a texture that you cannot find if you were to be using the same material throughout your entire piece. Her inspiration comes from history, thoughts, poems, fears, connections, stories, people, and places. She uses a technique of stitching thread on cloth with a machine. When she was younger, she painted. She prefers to use free form art over technique used. Stitching allows her to do this; comparing the thread/machine to a brush and the cloth to paper. It is easier for her to bring about ideas and expression this way, it is easier for her to not fully plan but let her art flow in the moment, making changes here and there if necessary. I can appreciate that because as much as......

The Person I Admire Most

...THE PERSON I ADMIRE MOST Talk about the person that I admire so much, a lot of names run through my mind. My mother, sister and some good friends. I even wanted to write about Shim Changmin, the man that made my eyes pop out and he is my love at first sight among the Korean boy bands. But then , I decided to write about a person whom I admire so much and who has influenced me a lot . she is my best friend from my hometown, Kerteh , Terengganu. Her name is Khairunnisa and everyone calls her NIsa. She is as pretty as her name but she does not seem to realise this or she chooses to ignore it. She has a face that every girl would die for. She has silky soft , white creamy skin. Her sparkling hazel eyes are complemented by dark sooty lashes . Her hair is straight , waist length and lustrous like the models in the Rejoice shampoo advertisement. She is a simple girl but yet other girls are envious of her. Though she is petite, small and slender she is strong willed and matured. It is not her physical appearance that made me admire her. Her personality attracts people like magnets. She is friendly, talks politely to everyone, has a good sense of humour, caring and a good Muslimah. Another good thing about her , she has no time for puppy love. Although she has many good looking suitors flirting with her, my elder brother included, she paid no attention to all of them. Sometimes I wish she had introduced some of the guys to me. However , being a good Muslimah, she stays......

Three Things I Value Most

...When I was asked to write this, I was a bit overwhelmed because as I started reflecting on my life. And I was even more overwhelmed when I realized that, in the perspective of a full life. Nevertheless, I’ve adopted a few simple philosophies that have helped me get through life. Trust your instincts: Your instincts are there for a reason. So LISTEN TO YOURSELF!!! Recognize that feeling in your gut when something is off. Or let your instincts lead you to the right decision in an extremely difficult situation. It’s not always easy to trust them, and I’ve always found that, for some reason, the voice in your head called “logic” will try to hush those instincts. Logic will talk you into playing it safe and may rob you of opportunities. If I had listened to myself saying I lacked experience required to tackle the leadership positions. I would have lost the chance to positively impact myself and others, and I’d be a very different person right now. I’m not suggesting you dismiss your brain altogether. Just consider going with your instincts first, then incorporate logic second. “But what if my instincts are wrong?” Well, they will be sometimes, but you must possess the belief in yourself to allow those instincts to shine through and the confidence to act upon them. Which leads me to point #2… Live confidently: We all know someone that lives life with confidence. Can you picture him or her? In the most trying situations they can be calm, cool and collected. And their......

Place I Feel Most Comfortable

...The place where I feel most perfectly content would have to be the gym. Going to the gym and exercising is the best decision I’ve made in my life. I started 3 years ago as a kid with horrible self-esteem and zero self-confidence. I would walk with my head down and never give myself any credit for anything I did. Three years later of hard work and dedication in the gym has made me a completely different person. It has given me so much more self-confidence and a different look on life. I was very intrigued by fitness from the start. I would come home and read articles online about how to better myself in the gym for countless hours on end. I became knowledgeable about exercise and nutrition very quickly and would constantly be approached by complete strangers in the gym with questions regarding these topics. I was astonished that I went from a kid that was extremely ignorant of anything to do with exercise or nutrition to someone that others trusted asking their fitness questions to. This is when I realized my importance to others while in the gym was much higher than it was anywhere else. While in the gym I was somebody others looked up to and not just someone who was over looked like I was used to. I feel joy and excitement when others tell me they want to look like myself or ask me what my exercise regimen is like. Helping people reach their fitness goals and establishing friendships with them along the way is what I love to do. Watching them experience changes in their......

Once I Plagiarized and Now I Am an Artist in My Trade

...I believe that our past makes us who we are now and our future depends on our present life. My life used to be very monotonous; everything which I did was decided for me by my parents. My parents even went out of their way to select which university I am going to attend, my career paths, etc. Today those memories bear my struggle to escape the chains that bind creativity in human being within a society. As I aboard a train to take me back in time, all those memories come rushing back to me. I am now looking at my past. Somewhere during eighth grade, I learned to free myself from the chains of plagiarism and become creative in my tasks. But before I became creative, I was very foolish, with no spark of creativity, doing what others told me to do. Although I was very obedient and hardworking, my basic problem was plagiarism. An example can be my Assignments which I never did on my own. Rather I asked my friends to do them for me. And my plagiarism wasn’t limited to my assignments, it was in everything. I was than introduced to a teacher named Mr.Naqi, although he taught mathematics at our school, he was primarily an artist. This was the man who introduced me to spiritualism and inspired creativity within me. Every day after class I spent an hour under his guidance, he used to talk on various subject like music, art, politics and occasionally some interesting personalities. He once quoted “Nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind as a steady purpose—a point on which a...

What I Used to Think About Art and Artists

...What I Used to Think About Art and Artists When I started taking this class this semester I wasn’t really sure exactly what to expect or which artists we were going to study. When I started this course I used to think that artists, as in painters, were all somewhat strange quiet people with few social skills. From my previous experience most of the people that I knew or knew about were a bit on the strange side. I knew a lot of unknown artists when I was younger and I still know some unknown artists now, it’s just that most of the ones that I know fit that particular stereotype. Rather messy in appearance and kind of closed off from most of society. I used to think that most artists behaved in a somewhat wild manner with wacky thoughts. Being an artist myself, pretty much everyone I knew in my high school art classes were all pretty strange, we were always causing a ruckus. I used to think when artists did art it just kind of happened. I guess I felt like it just came naturally to artists and the magic kind of just happened all on its own, like that it didn’t take a lot of effort to do it. I think that when I was in high school and taking a lot of art classes I just don’t remember thinking to much about what I had to do, I’m sure I probably did, I just don’t remember consciously think about it. I never really thought about what sources there would be for artists other than love, drugs, and alcohol. I guess that it what used to first pop into my mind when I......

I Love My Mother Most

Every time I have a problem or have a bad day, she is the person that makes everything better. I know I can trust her with anything, and to me that’s one characteristic that is very important. My mother has always given me wise advice. She has taught me so many things that will help me through life. She has always told me to stand up for what I believe in and not let others persuade me. She is always faithful and always there to listen. I know I can always count on her with anything. `One characteristic that stand out the most is her caring attitude toward us. She puts us children first in front of herself. Always making sure we are having a good day, and having food on the table when we come home. She has always helped me with school and I can remember when I was younger she would stay up all night helping me study for all my tests for school the next day. I remember a time when I was in middle school; I was having a lot of difficulty with my friends. They would constantly start drama and I would be in tears coming home from school. My mom was the one person who would give me the best advice on how to deal with the situation she would always be there to tell me everything is going to be okay. She has even helped me out with my hard breakups with boyfriends. She is the one person that knows when something is wrong. Recently, I just broke up......
