The Golden Pickle: How I Came to Understand Organizational Behavior

...values framework, each from the text for our class. The first observable artifact that comes to my mind – probably the one that comes to mind for all who work at Oglebay Park – the dark green golf shirt that all personnel outside the Golf and Lodge Department have to wear. These shirts can be seen from a mile away and have the familiar Oglebay Park logo on the right breast. These shirts get the job done in distinguishing an individual as an employee of the park. The Golden Pickle award, which the Park has recently started, can be used as another example of an observable artifact. The Golden Pickle can be interpreted for exactly what it sounds like – a little metal golden pickle pin that an employee puts on their green golf shirt. The Golden Pickle award comes from a customer services training in which all employees participate. An Oglebay Park employee receives a golden pickle for exceptional customer service. Customers or managers nominate employees to win the award. In addition to receiving a golden pickle, the company reports the employee’s name, and the reason for their nomination, in the company newsletter. The next terms include espoused values and enacted values. Organizations declare espoused values and favor those values highly. As a reader can see from the previous paragraph, customer service ranks high in the eyes of Oglebay Park’s administration and upper management values it greatly. The goal of meeting and exceeding a customer’s expectations should be on the......

... The cashier was all young and non-attentive to the customers and very rude. I politely inquired as to what meal I wanted to order that would have the Monopoly stickers on it. So I asked the young lady if I could have a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese no onions extra pickles, large? She says, “It comes with pickles.” I say yes it does, but I want extra pickles. Then she asks me, small, medium, or large? I said I told you I wanted large that way I can get the Monopoly stickers. She gives me a weird look, and then asks me, “Anything else?” I responded no. I was like okay. Maybe I shouldn’t’ have asked that I wanted a large with the stickers on them because they already came with them. But it seem like she wanted to have an attitude because it was close to closing time. On top of that, my friend that came in with me already had a cup from earlier and processed to refill his cup with ice at the soda machine as if he was going to steal soda. They basically stared him down the whole time and were quite annoying yet funny. Food-wise, the fries weren’t fresh considering they should have made a fresh batch. Instead, they tasted steal and not enough seasoning. My burger still had onions and no extra pickles. The only positive thing that came from this is my meal has two winning Monopoly pieces for a medium fries and drink that I will not be redeeming here. My drink was fine. And as to further my disappointment, I still ended up waiting a significant amount of time for my......

...Pickling is the process of preserving food by anaerobic fermentation in brine (a solution of salt in water) to produce lactic acid, or marinating and storing it in an acid solution, usually vinegar (acetic acid). This process is used in order to preserve perishing foods for long periods of time and is also intended to add a more salty and sour taste to the food. The dills are covered in certain acids which are used to help preserve the food for months. The many varieties of pickled and fermented foods are classified by ingredients and its method of preparation. Regular dill pickles and sauerkraut are fermented and cured for about 3 weeks. Refrigerator dills are fermented for about 1 week. During curing, colors and flavors change and acidity increases. Fresh-pack or quick-process pickles are not fermented; some are brined several hours or overnight, then drained and covered with vinegar and seasonings. Fruit pickles usually are prepared by heating fruit in seasoned syrup acidified with either lemon juice or vinegar. Relishes are made from chopped fruits and vegetables that are cooked with seasonings and vinegar. Other methods of food preservation that involve using acids to preserve foods are canning foods and sealing food, refrigerating, and also boiling as well. There are many safety precautions that are very important when it comes to food processing. The process of pickling involves working with different acids at different levels which proposes many safety features. Since......

A Dill Pickle

...A Lost Love In the short story “A Dill Pickle” the author Katherine Mansfield tells the story of a couple who meets again after six years. After this interval, a man and a woman who used to be lovers meet unintentionally in a café. They recall about days gone by - the day they spent at the Kew Gardens together. He tells her about Russia and how class-free the society is. At the café, the man indirectly insults her for still being alone. He tells her about his wonderful journeys and that he has accomplished the things they had said they would have done when they were together. The man continues talking, this time about how he studied the mind while he was in Russia and is unable to complete his sentence because he takes notice to his companion walking out on him. When it's time to pay he asks the waiter not to charge him for the cream since it was untouched. This story reveals how time does not change people. It doesn’t matter the experiences that people have been through or their status improvement, people’s manners will always reflect who they really are. In addition, the character in the story that mirrors this idea is the man. At first sight, the woman was surprised how he had changed. She saw another man in hi m. “He was certainly far better looking now than he had been then. He had lost all that dreamy vagueness and indecisions. Now he had the air of a man who has found his place in life, and fills it with a confidence and an assurance which was, to say the least,......

...delicious. Soon Jon had made so much chutney with so many different flavours that the pantry shelves were full and even then he was talking about making Whole Grain mustards. Janet worked out that each jar cost 50p to make but that assumed that they used old jars which they didn’t have to pay for. She took all Jon’s chutneys to the Farmers’ Market on Friday and sold them all, at a good profit too, about £1 a jar. The pantry was again empty. Jon carried on making more chutneys, then wholegrain mustards, then speciality pickles at Christmas; pickled onions, piccalilli, sweet pepper mustard, hot fiery mustard, orange marmalade in January - and every week his wife would sell them in the Farmers’ Market. Soon they realised that they had a business on their hands and would need some business assistance in taking “Cottage Condiments” (as they called themselves) forward. Thinking about ‘Cottage Condiments’ , they realised that they could make chutney, pickles, jams, marmalades, fruit preserves and bottled fruit, glace fruits and other sweets. Jon could produce 20lbs in a day. There were legal requirements if they sold to people other than in the Farmers’ Market or to their immediate friends; and if there really was a demand, they would have to make more in a day than their little cottage kitchen could produce. He bought the ingredients either in the Farmers’ Market or from local growers who were happy to let him pick the fruit he needed and to pay them for it without them......
