Structure and Process of Organizations

In the business environment, navigating through change is vital to the success of management and the organization as a whole. All organizations undergo change much like biological organisms do in life. They are born, grow, mature, and arguably die. Organizations are no exception and their lifecycle pattern along with management styles will be examined in this paper.

Organizational Lifecycle
Organizations go through different life cycles similar to those of people. People, for example, progress through infancy, childhood, teenage years, adulthood, and death. Childhood through the teenage years is characterized by rapid growth over a short period of time and that translates nicely to an organizations pattern as well. Organizations, like biological organisms, go through start-up, growth, maturity, and decline (Ciavarella, 2001). Imagine climbing a mountain. As you begin the climb, you start at the base (start-up), climb halfway up (growth), ascend the peak (maturity), and then descend back down the mountain (decline). This describes the typical stages of an organizations lifecycle and leaders who have an understanding of the dynamics involved will have more confidence and be more effective managers of change.
Start-up Phase
During the start-up phase, organizations build up capital, hire workers, and start to develop their products or services, policies, and procedures. Employees are generally very eager to make a name for themselves in this early phase and often act impulsively to whatever is going on around them. There are many reasons as to the decline; bureaucratic corruption, inequitable economic burdens, costly technology, moral decline or even external enemies to name a few (Upshur, Terry, Holoka, Goff, & Cassar, 2002, p. 171). Whatsoever the reason, what an empire leaves behind can be contributed to the spread of ideas and practices across many continents (lecture notes, 2009). Lifecycle of an Empire The Han Dynasty is one such declining empire. It was ruled by the family known as the Liu clan who had peasant origins. The reign started in 206 B.C.E. and lasted 400 years until 220 C.E. Having lasted longer than the usually life span, China considers it to be one of their greatest and most influential periods in history (Han Dynasty, 2009). During this dynasty, there were three periods—first was the Western or Former (206 B.C.E.-8 C.E.), second was the Wang Mang’s Xin (8 C.E.-22 C.E.), and third was the Eastern Later Han Dynasty (25 C.E.-220 C.E.). With each period, new leadership brought new clans and factions into the inner power circle of the empire (ChinaKnowledge, 2000). The prenatal lifecycle begins at the time a woman conceives. “Conception is the moment when a sperm fertilizes an egg to create a single cell called a zygote (Dontigney, 2012). Nutrition is important throughout pregnancy because not only does the mother have to supply herself with essential nutrients, she now has to also ensure that her fetus gets the needed amount of nutrients to survive and develop normally (Pruitt, p 700). Improper nutrition decreases the likelihood that the newborn will not be at the appropriate weight for his or her gestational age. There is also an increase of the risk of infection, learning disabilities, impaired physical development, and death in the first year of life (Pruitt, p 703). The diet that I would tailor to a pregnant woman would consist of daily prenatal vitamins to ensure that she and the baby are getting the essential nutrients even if she is eating a healthy diet. Prenatal vitamins also include folic acid, iron, and calcium. Folic acid can reduce the risk of birth defects of the brain and spinal cord, calcium prevents the loss of bone density in the mother, and iron helps both the mother and baby’s blood carry oxygen (WebMD, 2012). Aside from prenatal vitamins, I would ensure that the mom is eating small meals all throughout the day incorporating fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains.
