...AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF HERBERT HENRY SCHMIDT This is an autobiography of Herb Schmidt as told to Rhonda Schmidt in July of 2011. Herb was 93 years old at the time and his memory of past events was crystal clear. November 24, 1917, I was born in West Alton, Missouri to George Schmidt and Mary Smith Stormer. I was the sixth of eight kids: Bertha, Bill, Frank, Charlie, George, me, Albert and Ed. It was so cold in 1917 that my Mom could not give me a bath for 9 days. [pic] (George & Mary Schmidt, Bertha, Charlie, Bill, Frank, Albert, Herb, George, Ed) [pic] (This photo taken in July of 2011. This is all that remains of the Schmidt Homeplace on Red School Road in West Alton, Missouri. Herb was 93 at the time this photo was taken.) I went to the Red School. I had to walk one mile to school. It was one big room and we had up to 35 kids with only one teacher. There were eight grades. Grades 1 thru 4 were taught every year, but grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 were taught every other year; like if 5th was taught this year then 6th would be taught the next year and the same with grades 7 and 8. The brighter kids helped the slower kids. Albert always needed help. I don’t think he graduated. I took an exam on Health and the teacher did not know how to record it because I got 100%. The year I graduated there were 4 kids who graduated from 8th grade. ......

The Lil Mermaid

...The Little Mermaid is an example of how woman were seen in society. In the fairy tale, women are characterized by appearance rather than personality by both men and women. The little mermaid mentions “But if you take my voice, what shall I have left?”. In this quote, the little mermaid believes that she cannot just be herself to win the prince’s heart. The prince also looks at women the same way because of how he talks to the little mermaid. He asks her, “You’ve no fear of the sea, have you, my dumb child?”. He treats her as if she is still a small child just because she cannot speak. The tone helps shape the whole story into a feminist piece. Anderson relays the moral of the story for women in a cautionary tone to make them realize the message that is being said. The little mermaid gave up everything for the prince, and in the end, she paid a terrible price for it. Hans Christian Anderson’s writes her story The Little Mermaid in a cautionary tone with the usage of imagery and characterization to symbolize a feminist work of literature. The little mermaid’s grandmother demonstrates how appearance rules over personality. In the story, they characterized women in such a way that good looks are everything. When the little mermaid asked if the humans liked mermaids, the grandmother said, “They very thing that’s so beautiful here in the sea, your fish’s tail, seems ugly to people on the earth; they know so little about it that they have to have two clumsy supports called legs,......

The Herb That Could Heal Nations

...The Herb That Could Heal Nations Whether you call it Marihuana, Mary Jane, Cannabis or Ganja it is a herb that has many people advocating for its legalization once again. It is now unjustly classified as an illegal drug in most countries and as having no medicinal value in the United States constitution. The fact that medical cannabis is now available throughout Canada and twenty of the US states shows how biased and hypocritical the government is in regards to this plant. The fact is the legalization of cannabis would be beneficial to our society’s health, economic and judicial systems. Cannabis was the most widely used medicinal plant around the world with documentation of its use in China going back 5,000 years. There is evidence showing that cannabis has helped heal or alleviate symptoms in people diagnosed with epilepsy, asthma, cancer and arthritis. I have not heard of any cases of patients dying from medical cannabis use yet there are known cases of thousands dying from prescription drugs. The burden that is presently placed on our health care system would be alleviated by more effective medicine. This would mean fewer visits to the doctor, less waiting time for specialist appointments and more availability at hospitals. A healthier society would mean a better quality of life for everyone. The legalization of cannabis would not only save the government money spent on enforcing prohibition but would create millions in tax revenue. The......

Herb Kelleher

...Herb Kelleher: Let’s Get Nuts! Everyone have the ability to be a leader in today’s society, whether we chose to embrace the inner leader is up to the individual. By definition, leadership is characterized as a person with a vision and the ability to energize individuals to turn that vision into a reality. The book written in 1996 by Jackie and Kevin Freiberg explains how Kelleher and Southwest lead the airline business. To understand how far Herb Kelleher has gone in life, you have to understand where and how far Southwest Airlines has come. His ability to build relationships within a company and a new twist of how things should be run are reasons why his company still is thriving today. ...Enmanuel Castillo Honors American History Mr. Kumer October 3, 2014 Ellis, Joseph J. Revolutionary Summer: The Birth of American Independence. Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, Jun 4, 2013. Pp. 1, 625 Joseph Ellis considers congress essential in order to change the fate of the Americans. He loves to tell his stories in narratives that make you feel as if you’re inside the book. He takes us back to the historic summer of 1776 where the American colonist and the English disregarded their relationships and fought to the death. Everybody presumes the American Revolution started with the shots fired in the fields. Joseph Ellis believes when congress decided that independence from Britain was their best option in order to achieve freedom. The author views the battle between Continental Congress and English Parliament crucial, unlike the combat fought in the battlefield. He emphasizes the seriousness of government in the radical sunny season of 1776. Joseph Ellis states the incomprehensible sense his book has if the military and political events are told separately. This is due to the need of military action in order to accomplish diplomatic success. The author credits the independence from England to the efforts of the Continental Congress more than he credits the Continental Army. The influential figures are John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Dickinson, and Benjamin Franklin. He highlights the works of John Adams and praises him as hero in congress. The author......

Lil Wayne Folk Artist

...Lil Wayne Folk Artist According to Josh Tyrangiel, a writer for Time Magazine, “ Lil Wayne has a smoke-scarred rasp that makes him sound like Redd Foxx covering Bob Dylan.” I completely agree with Josh in comparing lil wayne with the iconic figure Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan is a common favorite. No one looks askance or questions me when I name Dylan as one of my two favorite musical artists. However, when i mention lil wayne to my friends, I often find myself facing a mouth agape, a scowl, or an expression disbelief: “thats a joke, right?” Even those who accept my declaration of favor for Lil wayne often come back with, “Dylan and Lil Wayne? Thats an odd combination”. But it is not odd; not at all. First of all, they’re both superb lyricists, each with his own distinctive style. Secondly, both Lil Wayne and Bob Dylan are frequently charged with being opaque, non sequiturian, disingenuous, abstruse, silly, banal, indulgent and nonsensical. Both are accused of stealing lines, not just because people seek to tear down those at the top, but also because both are engaged in the folk tradition. Finally, they both have similar flows. Musically speaking, both Dylan and Lil Wayne use existing songs as scaffoldings on which to construct their own. Dylan draws from country, blues, bluegrass, folk, and early rock music, sometimes taking melody, harmony, rhythm and even many of the lyrics from an existing song and putting his own spin on it, inserting his own lines. According to......

Supplements and Herbs

...LP10 Assignment: Supplements and Herbs After an extensive search on the internet, I was able to locate a few great articles on herbs and suppleents that may help reduce the risk of cancer or heart disease. Although there are a multitude of herbs and supplements that fit into this criteria, I choose to further research oregano, thyme, cilantro, basil, and garlic. Oregano, by many sources, has the highest level of anti-oxidants of all of the dried herbs. Oregano contains Rosmarinic acid that gives it it's strong anti-oxidants. A study from Long Island University, NY, took parts of oregano and added it to prostate cancer cells in a study, amazingly it quickly irradicated them. After just four days, most of the cancer cells were killed and even more strange the tests shows the cancer cells were triggered to kill themselves. The exact recommended dosage of oregano is still being studied, but who knew eating pizza could potentially reduce your risk of getting certain types of cancer. There are countless online sources that suggest that oregano can also help reduce the risk of heart disease, however none of them have much explanation as to why the herb could do so. The only partial explanation is that oregano may help destroy free radicals which are associated with degenerative diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Thyme contains very high levels of anti-oxidants because it also contains high levels of rosmaric acid just as basil. Thyme also contains thymol and carvacrol......

Where Is the Message

...admits to not doing anything in his raps but is strictly entertainment.  After this weird message is a follow-up verse of “Stay out my spot, don’t speak my name, Or I’ll pull up on your block at night, wearing all black and let that 40 bang.” These words are from a teenage Caucasian male from Ohio. In his interview with Complex, Slim admitted to creating ‘Drill Time because he considers rappers like Chief Keef, Lil Bibby and Lil Herb, who all have worked with the genre, his influences. The problem about the wrong message being sent is that kids like Slim Jesus thinking it is okay to rap about activities he did not part take in. Such as the line “You thought shit was sweet ‘til I ran up with no fuckin’ mask.” This says a lot about society’s acceptance of killings of the young and gangbanging. The standard bar that has been lowered from how hip-hop originated to what we as the people allow now.             A more current rapper who shows a different type of political aspect, with mixed in new age rap and a little hint of letting the people know what goes on around him is Lil Herb. A recent song from him called “Bottom of the Bottom”. The chorus has something that it is hardly mentioned in rap music, with both of a mix of past and current struggles of African American men; “From the bottom of the bottoms, there was nothing under me, Now the judge hangs us with 100 years, used to hang us by a tree”. It portrays when African American slaves were hung because of many reasons other......

Fda Should Regulate Herbs

...Herbal Supplements The FDA should regulate herbal supplements as it ensures safety for the consumer. If taken properly, herbal supplements have great benefits. The problem is that there simply is not enough regulation of the herbal supplements. Many herbal supplements can be dangerous if taken incorrectly. What’s worse, people simply do not have enough information about the benefits and risks of herbal supplements. A great example of the lack of regulation is overuse of Ephedra. A while back, people started taking mass amounts of Ephedra in order to lose weight. It ended in a great amount of deaths, causing the FDA to take measures against makers of medicines containing Ephedra. Because it was considered an herbal supplement, it did not have the same scrutiny as synthetic drugs. Herbal supplements can be just as powerful as synthetic drugs, so the same vigilance in regulation should apply. Also, harmful ingredients sometimes end up in herbal supplements, which present an entirely new risk. If herbal supplements were more closely monitored, there would be a better chance of preventing this from happening. Because of the lack of regulation, consumers do not have any assurance that what they are buying is safe. Consumers need that assurance, especially when it comes to health products. There also is not very much awareness about herbal supplements. People do not realize how powerful some herbal supplements are. Many people hold the mistaken belief that herbal supplements...

Herb Kelleher Analysis

...Business of Business is People: A Leadership Analysis of Herb Kelleher When asked about September 11, 2001, Herb Kelleher said the following, “The first thing on my mind, quite honestly, was the well being of our crews and our passengers. Are we getting the airplanes down safely? Do we know where everyone is? Are we taking care of them?” –Herb Kelleher (Yeh). Herb Kelleher was born in Camden, New Jersey on March 12, 1931. His father was a Campbell’s Soup Kitchen manager. Herb studied at Wesleyan, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He then earned a law degree from New York University. While working in San Antonio as a lawyer, Herb was approached by a client with the idea of creating a low-cost, no-frills airline in 1967. This low-cost strategy would be implemented by getting rid of services that were not necessary as well as using secondary airports. This would, in effect, allow them to offer very low fares (Herb Kelleher Biography-Facts). Herb Kelleher was the CEO of Southwest Airlines from 1981 until he stepped down in 2007 (Herb Kelleher Biography-Facts). It is his leadership that has made Southwest Airlines the remarkable company that it is today. Herb was taught at a very early age about treating people with respect. That is certainly evident in his leadership. “The business of business is people – yesterday, today, and forever.” Throughout his tenure at Southwest, Herb made that phrase a core value of the company. Whether an employee had a child, or......
