How Stress Affects Our Health In life there is not one human being who has not felt the anxiety or heart pounding feeling of being stressed. I believe this is a silent disease that slowly takes over one’s life one way or another. According to Kiev (1974), from a medical standpoint stress is just a nervous tension because life is being lived too quickly; therefore, the energy is being wasted. Stress can wear an individual out and cause heath issues once entering adulthood. Feeling stressed is so common in everyday life that it has become a way of life. When individuals are under stress they tend to panic, not realizing the toll it is taking on their body and mind. Stress starts to affect the body by prolonging the levels of fat, causing the immune system to diminish and leaving the body weak and vulnerable to infections (Reinhold, 1996). There are several types of stresses that can affect you and cause cognitive issues, emotional issues, mental issues, and physical issues. A type of stress that many come across several times in their life is short-term stress. Probably the most common type of stress that there is. This type of stress that last for a small amount of time, hens the name short-term stress. An example of short-term stress is when there is a deadline on an assignment in school or work. It is something that once you have completed and turned in on the deadline all stress is completely gone. Chronic life stress is the complete opposite of short-term stress because this is something that may last years. For instance, an adult who as a child witnessed an event and has not been able to overcome it, such as, witnessing a loved one passing, being a victim of molestation, or a victim of abuse. We hypothesized that advertising that disrupts the experience of narrative transportation may be adversely appraised by audiences. This study aimed to explore the influence of two types of television programs: narratives (dramas, comedies, and soap operas) versus nonnarratives (light entertainment, sports, documentaries, and news), on smokers’ reactions to antismoking advertisements. In preexposure interviews, daily smokers (n ¼ 779) were asked to watch a particular television program they usually watched. Postexposure interviews were conducted within 3 days of exposure. Results indicated that placing an antismoking ad within a program in which the viewer is focused on the narrative flow of a story may lead to reduced immediate cognitive and emotional impact of the ad and reduced intentions to quit, especially among those for whom the ad is most relevant, such as those preparing to quit smoking. The one that stays behind (usually the mother), more responsibilities, finances, loneliness, and fear for the deployed soldier’s safety can cause anxiety, isolation, sadness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In my experience during my deployments, my family has felt isolation, loneliness, and stress of handling daily tasks without me. My son has taken his anger out on his mother because I wasn’t there to be with them. Studies have showed that Post-traumatic Stress Disorder not only hinders the soldier’s wellbeing, but also the spouse and children for soldiers with families as well as that of soldiers that are single because they take their frustration out on girlfriends, boyfriends, friends, and family. Personalities can be changed due to stress, a person may be under so much stress it causes them to become angry or depressed. Throughout this paper I will relate the effects stress has on our health. Stress influences our physical and mental health in more ways than we can imagine. There are two types of stressors. One causes distress where maybe you’re late for something and you get caught in traffic behind a slow driver. ...The article I've chosen to read and write about is about stress management. It was written for a website named helpguide.org. The author, Lawrence Robinson, has done a nice job of laying out his top 8 steps to help reduce, prevent and cope with stress. I found it very helpful to have a list with specific ways to help alleviate certain stressful situations. The author suggests that there is no “one size fits all” stress. I think that is important to understand. Every single person is different and what causes stress for one person may not even slightly affect that next. Trying to group all people into one specific stress group would be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, it just doesn't work. Most of us found that out when we were toddlers. Something that stood out to me in the author's description of how you handle stress is the response you give to someone who notices you looked stressed. For example do you find yourself always telling friends and family that “I have a lot of nervous energy, that's all”? People that respond with that answer haven't fully come to grips with the fact that they show a nervous energy when they are stressed and that it is obvious to those you are close to.
