What makes something morally right or wrong? This particular question is one that philosophers, thinkers, writers, and religious leaders have sought to answer for centuries.
In China, Confucius (d. 479BC) emphasized morality and touted the principle of treating others well. This proper behavior towards others, Confucius believed, originated with sincere thought, which in turn originated with knowledge.
In Greece, Socrates (d. 399BC), an Athenian philosopher, also focused on ethics, along with a unique method of teaching through asking questions. Aristotle, a later philosopher, elaborated that Socrates firmly believed that virtue was knowledge.
Even cursory reading illustrates that these thinkers, separated by land, water and time, felt that knowledge was a key component upon which one should base one’s life. This sentiment could also be the reason why, in many cultures, learned peoples were elevated to lofty positions.
For example, in Judaism, the Rabbi is the only person who can perform certain rites. Similarly, in Christianity, the Priest can conduct certain religious ceremonies that the layperson cannot. Moreover, in the religion of Islam, the Imam is needed to lead the daily prayers. The leaders of these three religions have at least one thing in common: knowledge.
This writer too feels that classical traditional knowledge is what one needs before one can decide if something is morally right or wrong. If someone does not personally have the required understanding, then he or she should turn to the leaders of the particular religion or ideology for guidance.
With this knowledge, one can then have available a toolbox with the tools needed to navigate through life. Ultimately, since most individuals inherently have a desire to lead a meaningful life, knowledge can lead to the opening of many doors. As the author states, “human beings naturally value…...

Engineers Ethical Actions

...The ideal professional engineer should, above all, be honest. Honesty in the engineering profession is very important as people often bet their lives on the safety of the engineers‟ products”. Ideally a professional engineer should be a critical thinker, creative, and have a strong enough confidence in his own ideas to stand up for them when being critiqued. This is sometimes not the case; I have met many engineering students who, when asked why they feel they have the best solution, back down and decide that they must be wrong. That is the opposite of what an ideal engineer should do. A professional engineer seeks to apply their sound moral reasoning, technical competency, communication ability, and ethical behavior to all situations they are faced with, both on and off the Clock. * Dedication * Diligence * Honesty * Efficiency 2.1 An engineer should be transparent and receptive to peer review or checking of his work if requested/required by the client/authorities 2.2 A checker engineer must be open to the views and design concept of the original designer and in areas of disagreement the checker must give justification for his disagreement. 2.3 A checker engineer should take full responsibility for the checking of the work himself. 2.4 An engineer should undertake CPD to enhance his knowledge and capability 2.5 An employer engineer should ensure that his employee engineers are BONA FIDE engineers registered with BEM. 2.6 An engineer should report......

As I was reading the Student Code of Academic Integrity I noticed how strict the sanctions and consequences could be if a student or faculty member do not follow them. I was not surprised because I could not expect less from an academic institution like the University of Phoenix. It is very impressive and fair the procedures used to investigate any violation committed towards Student Code of Conduct or the Student Code of Academic Integrity. One of the procedures that caught my attention was how the student is notified and has ten days to respond to the charges. Are Joe’s Actions Ethical or Unethical? Explain.

...Essay Q2 - Are Joe’s actions ethical or unethical? Explain. Before going in to the analysis of Joe´s actions it is important to point out that there are many different thought of school when it comes to ethics and morals and great philosophers throughout history has had a hard time deciding on any one universal ethical law. I personally tend to lean towards a mix of deontological ethics, where any acts is to be determined ethical or unethical based on whether it follows a certain set of rules or not, and what my religion teaches me namely that all actions are to be judged in the light of the persons intention. Given this background we first need to break down and understand what Joe has actually done, and why. Only then can we try to tie all pieces together to get a holistic view of the situation and determine whether his actions were ethical or not. Instruct subordinates to set aggressive targets I have a hard time finding anything unethical about asking your subordinates to set aggressive targets with the pure intention and belief that it will lead to better performance, given everything else remains the same. As a division-manager Joe is hired to do his best to get his division to perform at its top. If Joe sincerely believes that by simply asking his subordinates to set aggressive targets would make them perform at their best, given it does not harm other parts of the firm, it is his obligation to do so. To make it even more clear let us turn it around. What if Joe......
