I was sitting at the boarding gate waiting to board a flight with a burger and fries I just purchased from Macdonald’s. It was in New Delhi, India. After I took that flight and flew into the United States, the first thing I saw after immigration was a Macdonald’s. But it was not just the twist in hamburger I saw that day. I never thought that fusion of two different cultures felt so appetizing. Americanization just didn’t bring a new form of food to the historic land of India, it was much more. India is a land of vivid taste buds, an emerging economy and home to a very wrong conception about American culture and Americanization imported with it joy, the wrong conception about American life, and hard work, which in fact are shaping the Indian culture today.
As an Indian I have seen how local Indian flavors restricted American giants like KFC, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to be successful in the Indian market. Who in the whole world ever thought that KFC would include more vegetarian options than chicken on its menu? In his article “In 2000 Years, Will the World Remember Disney or Plato?” Mark Rice-Oxley frames a picture in our mind through his writing, describing a usual American day but in London. Thus leading us to his main argument, in 2000 Years, Will the World Remember Disney or Plato? He claims basketball is climbing the ladder, becoming more important in our lives each day and it’s not just basketball, but we are under the skies governed by American soft power. We can find, through examples, in the article that world cultures in some countries have given their own unique twist to the overtaking American culture. For instance, Japanese have taken the ideas of Fast-Food and Hip-Hop and given them a new twist, according to their culture and lifestyle. But the article comes to an end with the same argument with which it started, will Disney survive the falling sand of…...

...had to work hard in both the classroom, and the gymnasium to receive a full athletic scholarship. Basketball had always been my favorite sport growing up. I knew that if I could become an exceptional ball player, I could get my academics after high school paid for. It also meant that the financial burden of putting a child through college, would be taken off my parents shoulders. Physically, God gave me good materials to build with. I put my 6'7" body through rigorous drills, training, and conditioning to become the best basketball player I could be. My peers recognized my hard work, and made me their team captain for both my junior and senior seasons. I always seemed to be my own worst critic, which was both a blessing and a curse. At times it would push me harder, to a higher level of competition. There were other times however, that I would get to hard on myself and not be able to overcome the frustration of performing well. That may have been my largest hurdle in achieving success in basketball, but gradually I learned to channel the majority of my self criticism into positive energy. In the classroom, I studied hard and often. I graduated high school with a GPA of 3.8. I knew that to be offered an athletic scholarship, my grades would have to be just as good as my abilities on the basketball court. Keeping the end goal in the back of my mind, always helped to push me through all of my classes, and strive for a good grade. While putting myself through all the hard......

Hard Work

...“They say hard work pays off. I learned this by putting one foot in front of the other. Through cross country and track I have developed a strong work ethic and the mental fortitude to never give in, no matter how hot or cold the weather is or how tired or sore I am. When I first started track, I was a sprinter, but I decided to go out for cross country the following fall because my brother was a successful distance runner. Although I’m not as good as he is, it has shaped me into who I am today. Unfortunately, my high hopes for my senior season of cross country were crushed when I learned I might not be able to compete at all. It all started in June 2010. Staying upfront with the varsity girls, I was doing pretty well. Then one day I felt a pull in my left knee. I ignored it, thinking it was all in my head. But all through the next week it still hurt and got worse. Then, during a workout one day, I reached out my leg and felt a snap. Immediately, I fell to the ground, unable to put any weight on my knee. I went to the doctor later that day; only to find out I overused my patella tendon. Even now, I cringe when thinking about it. He told me there was a good chance I would not be able to compete that season, which had just begun. Feeling my throat tighten, I looked away so he wouldn’t see me cry. Determined to compete before the end of my final cross country season, I wasn’t willing to let this injury slow me down. First my coach had me start speed walking. I......

...you don’t join they do what they are known for which is beheading people or putting people in groups of about twenty and massacring them with their guns. Currently the United States along with most of the other countries have not done anything to stop them from reaching their goal, but the U.S has been watching over and sending missiles making sure ISIS does not gain too much power. Although it has not yet happen, this great nation will soon become involved in the problem in some way. The U.S. Should team up with another strong country like Russia and go and hunt down ISIS. The Islamic state has recently beheaded an American Citizen in video and posted it on the internet. This man was American journalist Steven Sotloff. In this video the ISIS executer says “Obama Just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of yours (“Steven Sotloff beheaded by ISIS militants”).” the U.S. in a way would be killing their own citizens if they kept sending over the missiles. America has one of the strongest armed forces in the world. The Islamic State has gotten the U.S. involved and called out Obama by telling him to stop sending bombs and if and he had failed to do so they will continue to cut the heads off of fellow Americans. The U.S. government should do what is necessary to stop this uprising caliphate. No more beheading of Americans, This is one very good reason why the U.S. should all together stop sending over missiles and go handle...

Hard Work Pays Off

...I believe hard work pays off in the end. If you give your 100 percent effort on what you are doing you will get the reward that you deserve or you will get what you want in the end. Hard work is what you need to do to accomplish something from the efforts that you put forth just to finish it. Also, knowing that you worked hard for something and you gave your very best doing your work, is a reward just by itself. The time in my life that made me start to believe that hard work really pays off is when I graduated in my 6th grade. I have realized that since I was in my 1st grade I was working hard to be in the honor roll. I always want to make my parents proud of me. I just love that overwhelming feeling of accomplishment when you finish something and you can make someone happy. Seeing my parents smile whenever I tell them I’m in the honor roll just makes me feel happy too. When I started high school I still maintained being a hard working person. I got an academic scholarship and I was accepted in the Special Science Curriculum in our school. We have 2 subjects of math and 2 subjects of science. We were more advanced than the other students in our school. It was a bit hard for me to maintain my honor roll though, because there is a lot competition going on with my other classmates. Most of them are smart but that didn’t hinder me. I worked a lot harder. I stayed up all night to review and finish all my projects on time. I passed my entire test and quizzes, maintained a good...

...we do on a daily basis has responsibilities that follows it. Personal responsibility means holding yourself accountable for you own actions; in the interest of your life and the direction you are headed. Failure to complete an assignment. By accepting the fact that the assignment was not complete because of your own negligence, is an example of self-accountability. Personal responsibility also means discipline, having the intestinal fortitude to do what needs to be done even when you do not feel like it. Staying focused on the tasks at hand and by not being easily distracted by thing of less importance shows discipline. As we grow older and move on with our lives. Our responsibilities are going to change. A lot of times we are going to add more and more responsibilities, especially when you have your own family. When you are responsible for not just your self but also an entire family, especially if you are the head of the household as the husband or father you really have to think of the outcome of the choices you are going to make. An example would be my life. Recently I have had a lot things change when I moved in with my fiancé and her daughter. Every choice I have now has to involve them because they live under my roof and my care. If I make the wrong choice about anything especially making the wrong financial choice we can easily end up living on the streets and that’s one thing I do not......

Hard Work Pays Off

...Hard Work Pays Off In many ways college is the most important stepping stone to one’s future. College is the transition from being a child to being an adult. By being given more freedom, and also a heavier workload, college makes young adults learn how to better manage their time knowing that there is no longer anyone sticking their necks out pushing them to succeed. For many, a college education, and eventually a degree is a goal they set for themselves long ago. For me, my college education, although helpful towards my future, isn’t necessarily being accomplished to please myself. I was raised, as one would consider a privileged child. By showing my parents respect and doing simple tasks they asked me to do, I was provided the best childhood one could ask for. I wouldn’t consider my family rich by any means, but my parents always found a way to give my brother and I some of the finer experiences in life. From travels, to gifts, to a roof over my head, and food on my plate, you could say I lived a very happy life. Growing up my parents always pushed me to do my very best in school. Though they made it seem like a choice, I knew they wouldn’t truly accept anything but my best effort. I pulled as many A’s as I possibly could, spent most my nights skipping social events to study, and sacrificed a lot of “being a kid” to make my parents proud of me. I was always told that my hard work would pay off in the end. Through out high school I continued pushing myself to get the......

About Life

...Life is beautiful but not always easy, it has problems, too, and the challenge lies in facing them with courage, letting the beauty of life act like a balm, which makes the pain bearable, during trying times, by providing hope Happiness, sorrow, victory, defeat, day-night are the two sides of the me coin. Similarly life is full of moments of joy, pleasure, success and comfort punctuated by misery, defeat, failures and problems. There is no human being on Earth, strong, powerful, wise or rich, who has not experienced, struggle, suffering or failure. No doubt, life is beautiful and every moment – a celebration of being alive, but one should be always ready to face adversity and challenges. A person who has not encountered difficulties in life can never achieve success. Difficulties test the courage, patience, perseverance and true character of a human being. Adversity and hardships make a person strong and ready to face the challenges of life with equanimity. There is no doubt that there can be no gain without pain. It is only when one toils and sweats it out that success is nourished and sustained. Thus, life is and should not be just a bed of roses; thorns are also a part of it and should be accepted by us just as we accept the beautiful side of life. The thorns remind one of how success and happiness can be evasive and thus not to feel disappointed and disheartened rather remember that the pain of thorns is short-lived, and the beauty of life would soon......

Joy of Life

...A Journey into My Life My personal enlightenment came about when I was married. When we first met everything was good. The feeling was like nothing I had ever felt for any woman and I wanted it to last forever. It was like how Alexander O’Neal said, “She touched me with a smile that glows; I can’t go a day without my sunshine.” She was just that. We eventually moved in together and were a normal, happy couple. We had our ups and downs like any couple does. We were having our first child and were very happy. So, I guess the darkness came when finances were getting kind of rough and we had to move from where we were living. It happened a lot and I couldn’t understand why when she was the one that was handling the bills. She was spending the money elsewhere, and not on our bills. We went to go live with her mother. While we lived there she used to get calls from other guys and letters from a guy she met while she was in jail and I was running around trying to get the money together to get her out, and here she wanted to be with someone else. Her brother always checked the mailbox. He and I would sit and read all the letters she got from her friend in jail. They were planning to be together and if I got in the way he was going to bring harm to me. So months passed by and she ended that with him before somebody was seriously hurt. We found a new place, but she started talking to other different guys and hanging out with cousins and “friends” from work. We had a......

A Hard Decision in My Life

...A Hard Decision In My Life All the people would be in dilemma and they may find it hard to choose. And I had found some choices that are very difficult to select. One is in my high school and that choice determined my fate. I have to choose my subject in the college entrance exam. One is art and the other is chemistry. In my second year of senior high school, I both focused on Chinese painting and chemical experiments. However, I really love the arts, and I want to choose arts test as my college additional exam and then I would abandon chemistry. In our class, most people have chosen chemistry as their major, and I do not want to follow the general trend and try something new but that is my interest. Nevertheless, I was discouraged by my art teacher. When I was sketching or painting, she always found my defects on my work then told me directly and said you were not a very gifted student in art, I wish you to think about your final choice. I thought about it and talked to my parents, and their opinions were likely to chemistry. Therefore, I was in a dilemma and I do not know what to choose. One is my interest and another is the subject my parents want me to choose. I cannot tell what is more advantageous. But after thinking about both prospective, I chose the chemistry and reluctantly said goodbye to my favourite. I think the college entrance exam ruined my dream. If I chose art as my major and strive for the college entrance exam, I think I can do better than before, and...

...both. Based on certain laws that are in place in regards to the insanity defense supports the decision to send her to a mental institution instead of the first decision that convicted her of murder and prison. Yes I believe that this is truly not a flaw but a legal alternative excuse that grants a degree of pardoning due to abnormal and uncontrollable behaviors. Yes and no. There are mitigating circumstances in some cases and living in the state of Texas there seems to be lively bandwagon that legislature seems to jump on every time some type of unsightly event occurs. I believe that Perry is more of a crime control governor and fails to see the importance of true rehabilitation especially in cases such as Andrea Yates. She works with people on a daily basis who truly have a problem that is uncontrollable and now feel that this reveals the how huge mental disability is and how it is linked to many crimes. I truly agree. If a person has impulsive or uncontrollable activities that is the same as locking up a drug addict with an addiction. These people need to be rehabilitated, not stuck in prison; help is needed. Yates is now in a mental hospital until a judge decides that she is stable enough to be released. He probably meant that the people of the jury got a bit personal in their decision and looked at the acts of Yates and its end result; her children were dead at the duty of her hands and felt she should be punished by the fullest extent of law like every......

...Aldana, Andres Mr. Savard English 28 July 16, 2014 Hard Work Learning was never an easy thing for me do growing up. It was as if my head was stuck in the clouds, dreaming of anything and everything and when someone said something to me it went in one ear and out the other. I found myself in bad times, by being afraid of my own work Throughout the years I learned what being a student was about by the influence of my peers, I had to start fresh by gained learning experiences that helped me in education. My style of learning is inspired by the coaches and teachers who helped me shape who I am today. Growing up was something that I remember best especially third grade, I think this when I had my first reality check also. I didn’t know what was going on at the time the teacher use of high vocabulary seemed like another language so I never did pay any attention. Soon I found myself in a few parent conferences. Soon after the conferences I was being held back. It was like someone was telling me I was not good enough to be with the same crowd. Walking down the halls of the school I thought that everyone was staring and laughing at me and the once easily spoken child was a speechless shell of a human being. It wasn’t until one of my old teachers noticed that I didn’t talk as much as I used to, she came over and asked me what was wrong so I told her, what happened and how I felt. She then put her hand on my shoulder and then told me something I would never......
