Avoiding Dropped Quotations
Bergen Community College
L. Jonaitis
Dropped quotations are those quotations that appear in the middle of your paper without being introduced. In order to transition into your quotation smoothly, avoid dropped quotations in your writing. If you start your sentence without explaining who's speaking, then the effect on the reader can be jarring. You want to eliminate that kind of confusion as much as possible.
Here is an example of a dropped quotation, as well as how you might fix it.
Holden gets frustrated and decides to leave. "People are always ruining things for you" (Salinger 88).
See how that quotation is simply "dropped" in the middle of the writing there? (There's no introduction to the quoted passage.) Avoid this by introducing the quote--explain who is speaking, what's happening, etc.
Below is a way to remedy this:
Holden gets frustrated and decides to leave, claiming that "people are always ruining things for you" (Salinger 88).
Another way to eliminate the dropped quotation would be simply to add the words "she says," or "the author claims," etc.
Holden gets frustrated and decides to leave. He claims that "people are always ruining things for you" (Salinger 88).
Here are some signal words you can use to eliminate dropped quotations: Acknowledges | Comments | Describes | Insists | Responds | Adds | Compares | Disputes | Maintains | Reveals | Admits | Concludes | Emphasizes | Notes | Says | Agrees | Concedes | Endorses | Observes | Shows | Argues | Confirms | Finds | Points out | Suggests | Asserts | Considers | Endorses | Predicts | Thinks | Believes | Contends | Grants | Refutes | Warns | Claims | Declares | Illustrates | Reports | Writes | | Denies | Implies | | |

...11-17-12 Quotes Project for “Glass Menagerie” Quote 1- Throughout the story, “Glass Menagerie”, Tennessee Williams wrote responses of each character that was able to develop the thesis, plot, and themes. Details given early in the book help establish the characters’ personalities and physical looks, which aide to the readers understanding of the characters’ actions. The conversation between Amanda and Laura, (page 17) “Amanda: Girls that aren’t cut out for business careers usually wind up married to some nice man….Laura: But Mother…..I’m- crippled!” reveals that Laura is physically handicapped and she allows her disabilities to determine her choices in life because she is embarrassed. This certain conversation is important because it displays Laura’s insecurity, which affected her decision to drop out of business school. When reading this conversation I became saddened by the fact that Laura allows her physical disability to govern her life. She is held back from being successful in life because she has a mental block. Later in the text, the author reveals to the reader that Laura has no social life and dropped out of business school because she could not handle the pressure. Not only am I saddened by Laura’s yielding behavior, but I can relate to her mental block. When entering high school I was very small, to be exact, I was 5’2 112 pounds, while the average male peer was 5’8 150 pounds. Because of my lack of size, I tended to be non-aggressive; playing football I......

Instruction to Read Futures Quote

...Instructions 1) Get a handle on the naming and quoting conventions for your commodity product. If you find your data through a news provider such as The Wall Street Journal or The New York Times, you do not have to worry about what the bizarre ticker codes stand for, since the products are listed without them. Even the CME itself displays price quotes without the special notation so you need not struggle to see that "CZ10.CBT" stands for the December 2010 CBOT contract for corn. Yahoo Finance lists ticker symbols as well as the product name. For the exact product and month symbols for your commodity, refer to contract specifications posted by the exchanges or resources such as FuturesKnowledge.com, which provides a legend of contract month and product codes. 2) Read a futures chain downward for differing futures maturities. You will sometimes encounter what is called a futures chain, or with options you might see an options chain. The CME, for example, will display any number of contracts with the same core product together in a data table. In the case of corn, as you go down the months column of this table, you might see futures contracts for March 2011, May 2011, July 2011, September 2011, December 2011, all the way through to 2014. Use these tables to compare contracts of varying maturities and their respective prices for a given trading day to get an overview of all the tradeable futures for your commodity. Now that you have your contracts lined up, what are you...

It Dropped so Low

...[“It dropped so low- in my regard”] There are countless ways to interpret any given poem. While the author of the poem knows exactly what they are saying, the reader may decide that it is entirely different for them. Emily Dickinson’s poems are very highly interpreted, due to the fact that she is one of the best loved and most celebrated American poets. Each of her poems is seamlessly woven to create an image that can be both beautifully literal and metaphorical. Her poem [“It dropped so low- in my regard”] is a fine example of this. While literally about a broken piece of crockery, this poem can actually be interpreted as a metaphor for Emily Dickinson’s complicated, lonely love life. To fully understand Emily Dickinson’s poetry, and this poem in particular, we must understand a bit of her life. Emily is known for having been a recluse, her life a deliciously obscure mystery. She was born in 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts to a respectable family. Her early childhood seems to have been a happy one. She was the middle child and rather the pet of her older brother and her lawyer father. Dickinson was always an eccentric, even at a young age. While she attended church regularly with her family, she refused to officially join the church, and she never called herself a Christian. She was reported to be a good student, but she was always sickly, and only spent a year at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before having to leave because of her health. She began writing poetry......

...Quotes! "The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love, and be loved in return!" Moulin Rouge “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves. Love never fails…” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8; 13 “Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves,
when our dreams have come true because we have dreamed too little,
when we arrive safely because we sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess, we have lost our thirst for the waters of life; having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity,
and in our efforts to build a new earth,
we have allowed our vision of the new heaven to dim. Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas,
where storms will show Your mastery, where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back the horizon of our hopes;
and to push us into the future in strength, courage, hope, and love.
This we ask in the name of our Captain, who is Jesus Christ. Amen" Sir Francis Drake "Worship is my response to what I value most. What I value most is God.  I was made by Him and for Him. He is Awesome beyond Comprehension! I exist for the purpose of reflecting back to God His...

The Case of Misrouted or Dropped Calls

...The Case of Misrouted and Dropped Calls By Teresa Yohe Crown College Prof. Steve Graham Business Research Methods January 11, 2015 CASE The case that we are working on today involves complaints that have surfaced recently that an increased number of incoming calls are being misrouted or dropped. Yesterday, when passing by the main reception area, I noticed the receptionist fiddling with his hearing aid. In the process, a call came in and would have gone unanswered if not for my intervention. This particular employee is a 20-year veteran of the company and could retire. He is well liked and seen as a fixture in the company. First choices, though, seem to be retirement or firing. Both choices seem to be drastic and more information is needed. RESEARCH The best research I could find comes from Jerry L. Yanz, PhD. Dr. Yanz is Vice-President, Education and Training, Micro-Tech Hearing Instruments, Starkey Laboratories, Inc. The following are excerpts from his report on hearing aids and their history. “In 1947, Sam Lybarger developed a solution to the problem of acoustic feedback that is generated when a telephone receiver is held close to a hearing instrument. Taking advantage of the inductive leakage from the phone's dynamic receiver, Lybarger placed a receiving coil in the instrument, thus providing an alternative transduction path for the phone output. For the first time, a person wearing hearing instruments could use the phone effectively without acoustic......

...1. Quotations (how he engages his young audience + rhetorical devices and message) – do not write the paragraphs – just decide what point you want to make (with that quotation) He gets his audience involved by using the word sexy: ‘’ let me further point out how ubiquitously the word ‘sexy’ is used to describe late-model gadgets’’ he makes this whole thing easier for us to understand, by using words we use and say. Another quote that appeals to us as a young audience is: ‘’It’s all one big endless loop. We lie the mirror and the mirror likes us. To friend a person is merely to include the person in our private hall of flattering mirrors.’’ This is one of the issues the youth have, to look good and be liked. And by this quote he light up this. The message of this essay is that.. 2. Write a funnel introduction a. Write an alternative introduction, where you begin with a quotation from Franzen’s essay ‘’Alongside their built-in eagerness (of consumer technology products) to be liked is a built-in eagerness to reflect well on us. Our lives look a lot more interesting when they’re filtered through the sexy Facebook interface. We star in our own movies, we photograph ourselves incessantly, we click the mouse and a machine confirms our sense of sense of mastery.’’ Here he addresses his young self-centred audience. He shows us how the new technology has its effect on them. How it makes them more and more selfish and anti-social. Anti-social in a way, that they......

Motivational Quotes

...Motivational Quotes "If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way." -Napolean Hill Why I like it: Simple words, deep meaning. Sometimes I may feel some goals are too far to reach, then this quote inspires me. Not always can we do great things, but we can do small things that other people will appreciate. Never is a challenging goal easy to accomplish, but we can start from what we can and make the first step. “Small” never means nothing, because thousands of drops of water can make a sea. How it relates to The Truth of Motivation: This quote reminds me that if one goal seems too hard to reach, just do what we can firstly and carry on. Small things can still make difference. In fact, this quote is the inspiration for me to set up my goal-reaching & motivation system. When I can face a challenging task that seems hard to finish, I will divide it into several small goals, and do it step by step. After I reached one goal, I would just give myself a little reward. Thanks to this quote, I developed a method to motivate myself when facing challenging goal. "The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goals to reach." -Benjamin Mays Why I like it: The quote encourages me, even when I’ve failed for several times, I will never be too frustrated, because I know failure is not always a bad thing. The quote warns me, sometimes I may feel confused and don’t know what to do, then I tell myself I can......

...Quotes Hold a true friend with both your hands. "Crazy friends make crazy times..." A million memories... A thousand secrets... A hundred inside jokes... One reason... Best friends Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning to dance in the rain." “Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today." "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." We are never given dreams without also being given the power to make them come true. Are we not like two volumes of one book? My best friend is the someone who brings out the best of me. A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words. A true friend is someone who holds who up when you’re down. A good friend sees the first tear, catches the second and stops the third the reason we’re not sisters, is because our parents couldn’t handle us if we were sisters. you're such an important part of my life you are my companion, my twin, my best friend If you love something, set it free if it comes back, it was meant to be. If it continues to fly, let it soar, have faith that God has something better in store. Quote Analysis

...Quote Analysis “She shook each hand reluctantly; touching them was physically distasteful to her. But she made the effort to overcome this feeling so contrary to Christian charity and, in the spirit of mortification, forced herself to kiss the children who accompanied their mothers; they were all fat and pink, overfed and with dirty faces, like little pigs.” p. 245(59 words) The narrator of this quote is the Viscountess and it shows the hypocrisy of upper class that is seen throughout Suite Francaise. The Viscountess just convinced the wives of farmers who had extra food hidden in their houses while she herself refused to give or even sell any of their wealth of food with anyone. The Viscount, himself, was made the mayor of the town and had as such had a surplus of supplies. Just before the Viscountess talked to the ladies, “The viscountess said with sigh, remembering that she spent 850 francs on the shoes she was wearing (fortunately, the viscount was the local mayor and she had coupons for shoes whenever she pleased),”(p.g.241) revealing the ease of access to supplies. The viscount was actually attempting to rally the town together and create a community where everyone assisted everyone else except for his family which held on to everything they had. Another issues discussed in this quote is the attitude of the upper class of France to people of lower class. The Viscountess calls the children “fat and pink, overfed and with dirty faces, like little pigs.”......
