21st Century Segregation: Are We Still Divided by Race?
Racial segregation was a concept that began in early history and is still prevalent in some societies today. It is often seen as a destructive forceful tactic of separating individuals based on their racial background. However, many new immigrants voluntarily choose to live in a segregated society. Segregation can be easily seen in certain communities where there is a concentration containing a particular racial group.
The area where one lives significantly influences their overall quality of life as well as their job, education opportunities, formation of social relationships and networks or access to a mortgage. These aspects have an impact on socio-economic status and the accumulation of assets, and this makes housing crucial for the integration of minorities into society.
Neighbourhoods that have a higher poverty rate are not able to support as many retail establishments, leading to inadequate access to quality of goods and services. When the neighbourhoods are geographically isolated it “may limit access to employment or social contact with other urban residents” (Walks, 2010).
Segregation is defined as the policy or practice of separating people based on their race, class, ethnic group, religion or gender, especially as a form of discrimination. Racial segregation is not an isolated phenomenon. There are examples of segregation that can be dated back through history, most notably the racial segregation of African Americans in the southern United States, and the apartheid policy that was implemented in South Africa. to the development of racially stigmatized ethnic neighbourhoods including Chinatowns, and ghettos, which are often seen as impoverished and economically marginalized areas.

During this time, “the color line was firmly established in American culture, and there was infrequent crossing of the divide” (Bowles, 2011, section 2.3, para 17). There was unquestionable detriment to the growth of the African American community, as well as increased timidity for basic African American rights. The issues of segregation and racism that were so prominent during this era in America were one of the ways that Black Americans remained almost invisible in a white society. Despite the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of slaves, race continued to be a problem in early twentieth century America. One of the most critical issues surrounding the further entrenchment of racial segregation within the early twentieth century was the development of policies and laws that did not follow the emancipation guidelines for ex-slaves, but instead made segregation and discrimination of African Americans more prominent. These laws were at first called the Black Codes, allowing for differences in the way that African Americans were treated both privately and publically. In spite of this however, there remain deeply entrenched processes of discrimination resistant to legal and political interventions throughout society (Solomos 1993). This essay will discuss the claim ‘there ain’t no Black in the Union Jack’ in relation to these processes of discrimination which have encouraged the mis representation and exclusion of Black people within British society. The first part of the essay will outline the meaning of race and racism in the 21st century. It will then go on to discuss processes of exclusion, which are reinforced by the media and politicians representation of black migrants and the existence of so called ‘White spaces’. These exclusions of black people can be seen to prevent them from identifying as British thus excluding them from being part of ‘the Union Jack’. ... EDU 210 Students in the 21st Century I chose to observe children for a three-hour block at my three daughter’s dance studio. These children were a variety of different ages, from three to ten. The format was both structured (during the classes) and unstructured ( in between). Girls are very giggly. Their communication style was very dramatic. During their unstructured time, girls of all ages were running around, giggling, happy and being overly expressive. All the girls smiled and were generally happy. Some of the girls communicated with more body language than the others. This was evident by them using their hands while talking or by touching each other while speaking. I witnessed many girls grab hands, arms, or hug in a loving manner to display affection as they were speaking or as part of a greeting. The girls talked about upcoming events like Christmas, gifts that they wanted and excitement over the upcoming Christmas dance recital. The older girls talked about school, upcoming tests, and the fast approaching Christmas break. There was some discussion of boys, but very little. Phrases I heard over and over were “Oh My God” and “ That’s adorbs” . As a mother of three girls, these are phrases I am very familiar with. The attitudes displayed were generally very happy. In school we study the notorious figures of Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. The concepts of segregation and inequality are often taught in a historical context.
